Since 2023, I have been exploring China’s rich intangible cultural heritage, with a focus on Ningbo’s Yong, Ninghai, and Yue Opera. Ningbo is a city deeply rooted in traditional art forms, and my research has provided an opportunity to closely study Yong Opera, one of its most significant cultural expressions.

Recently, I attended the annual performances of Ninghai and Yue Opera, and the experience was truly remarkable. These productions showcased the depth of storytelling, elaborate costumes, and intricate performances that have kept these traditions alive for generations. While significant efforts are being made to fund and support these art forms, there appears to be a disconnect among younger audiences. That said, the shows attracted packed theatres with enthusiastic spectators, demonstrating the enduring appeal of these operas.
Here are a few pictures capturing the vibrant performances and the passion of the artists!
